
The objective of this webinar is to teach participants how to empower students so that they can build the confidence needed to advocate for themselves. To provide examples on how to engage students in the IEP process by allowing them to learn about their learning styles, strengths and weaknesses and how to ask for help when needed while still maintaining a maximum level of independence. This webinar will discuss the following topics:
- Disability Awareness
- Interest Inventories
- How to effectively communicate wants, needs, and problems that may arise
- Developing the confidence needed to work and live independently
Provide participants with the tools and strategies needed to help build a student’s confidence in order to get and keep a job and live as independently
as possible.

Joey Ellis, Middle Tennessee Regional Coordinator, STEP, Inc.
Joey Ellis became part of the STEP team in July of 2011. Joey holds a B.S. Special Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin and has 5 years of teaching experience in both CDC and Resource settings. As a person who experiences disability, a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, Mr. Ellis had an IEP
growing up. He watched as his parents advocated for his rights and eventually began advocating for his own rights. These life circumstances led him to pursue a degree in Special Education and a career helping both students with special needs and their families. Joey’s areas of expertise and special interest are Transition Planning, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy.
